BHAGWAD GEETA SUGGESTS APPROACHING A GURU - THE SPIRITUAL MASTER

Bhagwad Gita recommends a spiritual seeker to approach a Self realized person for the purpose of Liberation. Media controversies related to 'Babas' or 'Godman' should not confuse our minds.

An Ideal Situation

There are hundreds of true practitioners on whom media does not focus because they don't create sensation and don't contribute to TRPs. More over people can not identify them.  There is absolute necessity of a guru or the spiritual master if one wants to come out of the maize of illusion.

We bring to notice two important Shlokas or verses from Bhagwad Gita for everyone’s contemplation.
tad viddhi praṇipātena
paripraśnena sevayā
upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ
jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ
Synonyms:
tat — that knowledge of different sacrifices; viddhi — try to understand; praṇipātena — by approaching a spiritual master; paripraśnena — by submissive inquiries; sevayā — by the rendering of service; upadekṣyanti — they will initiate; te — you; jñānam — into knowledge; jñāninaḥ — the self-realized; tattva — of the truth; darśinaḥ — seers.

Translation:

Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.
Bg 4.34
yaj jñātvā na punar moham
evaṁ yāsyasi pāṇḍava
yena bhūtāny aśeṣāṇi
drakṣyasy ātmany atho mayi
Synonyms:
yat — which; jñātvā — knowing; na — never; punaḥ — again; moham — to illusion; evam — like this; yāsyasi — you shall go; pāṇḍava — O son of Pāṇḍu; yena — by which; bhūtāni — living entities; aśeṣāṇi — all; drakṣyasi — you will see; ātmani — in the Supreme Soul; atha u — or in other words; mayi — in Me.

Translation

Having obtained real knowledge from a self-realized soul, you will never fall again into such illusion, for by this knowledge you will see that all living beings are but part of the Supreme, or, in other words, that they are Mine.
Bg 4.35

Explanation
No one can be spiritually realized by manufacturing his own process, as is the fashion of the foolish pretenders. The Bhāgavatam (6.3.19) says, dharmaṁ tu sākṣād bhagavat-praṇītam- the path of religion is directly enunciated by the Lord. Therefore, mental speculation or dry arguments cannot help lead one to the right path. Nor by independent study of books of knowledge can one progress in spiritual life. One has to approach a true spiritual master to receive the knowledge.

Such a spiritual master should be accepted in full surrender, and one should serve the spiritual master like a menial servant, without false prestige. Inquiries and submission constitute the proper combination for spiritual understanding. Unless there is submission and service, inquiries from the learned spiritual master will not be effective.

The primary cause of illusion is that person identifies himself with body and thinks of things related to the body to be his own. But, the individual person is different from body. This soul is part and parcel of the Super-soul. There is a need to understand the relationship between Soul & Super-soul

For want of sufficient knowledge in the absolute science, we are now covered with illusion or maya, and therefore we think that we are separate from the Super-soul. Sense of being an identity apart from Super-soul is called māyā.

But when one is situated in trans or samadhi through Karma Yoga (work), Gyan Yoga (knowledge) or Bhakti Yoga (service) in direction of a true spiritual master, one sees the truth and becomes liberated from illusion.
